Ecotone is committed to racial and social equity, and the elimination of the structural and systemic barriers that persist today. Our human capital is the most valuable asset we have. The collective sum of our individual differences, life experiences, knowledge, and self-expression are essential to reimagine the world we live in and to advance equitable opportunity for all. The continued push towards equity – racial, social, health, environmental, and economic – is a complex challenge. It’s sometimes difficult to understand where and how change can happen because systems boundaries are overlapping and expansive.
Ecotone has developed a tool called the Investment for Equitable Communities Framework to help evaluate this intersection of systems change and community outcomes based on social investment allocation in a given geography. Adapted from a research framework out of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, this framework maps outcomes from social investments to understand how impact occurs, and across what levels and areas of influence for a particular geography.
In addition to being an internal visibility and decision making tool, it’s a cross-sector collaboration, communication, fundraising, and policy tool that can be used as a bingo card of sorts, to allow players across the ecosystem to engage and cooperate. From the nonprofit service provider to the large intermediary or from a fortune 100 company to a municipality, the framework allows for an objective, outcomes-focused line of sight on social investments; identifying gaps, investment opportunities, or potential partnerships to develop a more holistic response.
It’s a strategic model that can illustrate what, how much, and for whom social impact investments are impacting. See an example in our Healthy Town Impact Overview, where we mapped several of its projected outcomes to the framework to identify how it’s planned investment could address the health and wellness of the community across different levels of influence. The time for transformation is now. The Investment for Equitable Communities Framework helps organizations develop strategic visions and inform decision-making on how to invest in impact.
